week 8 reading tasks matariki

WALT:Summarise and analyse ideas and information from different texts

👋hey readers throughout the week i have been reading and watching videos about matariki enjoy my summary

Video #1: From Ranginui and papa-enugu. They are the parents of the family Matariki. Matariki are seven sister stars.

They are very entertaining young sisters. They like to whizz about Zigzagging around other stars.

Oh we need to stop them, says the parents. Oh, I know a good job. They can be the sign of the new year said tanil tanil

Video #2:

Matariki is the name for Maori new year

The stars come up to show between the 19th of June and the 11th of July and you can see the stars for the whole year

The other name for Matariki is the seven sisters

We can celebrate Matariki in several different ways

It is a time for family’s to to tell stories about Matariki and to have Kai and the day is a lot more short

It is time for people to learn about the stars in the old days

Te Papa Website: not all iwi celebrate at the same time

From early June, before sunrise, look to the north-east horizon. Find the constellation Tautoru, or Orion’s belt (sometimes called ‘the pot’). Trace a line northwards from the three stars of Tautoru. Look for a faint sparkle of tiny dots, about the same width as Tautoru is long. This is the Matariki star cluster. Matariki can also be seen during the summer months in this location of the sky after sunset. The mother is Matariki, and her daughters are Tupu-ā-nuku, Tupu-ā-rangi, Waipuna Rangi, Waitī, Waitā, and Ururangi

Celebrating Puanga at Ramanui:

Near the maunga (mountain) of Taranaki,
